A common word that you will often hear in poker is the word range. What is a range?
A range is a rough estimate of all the possible hands that you think that your opponent can have.
Below is an example of a persons range, marked in blue that we might hink the opponent has
Top of range and bottom of range
There is something referred to being top of the range and bottom of the range. What this mean is that if someone with the above example the top of the range would be AA, AK, KK and QQ.
As for the bottom of the range it could be A2-A9s, pocket 22s to pocket 55s. That would be one of the bottom of the range of the opponent.
It’s important to remember this.
When you make a decision some of that decision should be decided by the range that you think your opponent has and not which hand he actually had at showdown.
For example if you had the range in the example and this time he had the KK which is the opponents top end of the range.
However just because the opponent had the KK now doesn’t mean that it always will be like that. The KK hand was in the range we assigned.
This is how you should always think of when playing poker and especially when your opponent is showing the top of the range hand.
